The Boulevard Blanket - Free Chunky Knitting Pattern - Updated!

Two years ago this week I published my first blanket knitting pattern - The Boulevard Blanket.

This blanket is quick and easy to knit...and it's reversible!  This is a great pattern for any level of knitter.

I'm happy to announce that The Boulevard Blanket knitting pattern has been updated to include instructions for six blanket sizes!

The Boulevard Blanket - CLICK to download the FREE PATTERN
Click here to download the PDF pattern file for The Boulevard Blanket.

Or, click here to download the pattern FREE on Ravelry

Or, click here to download the pattern FREE on LoveKnitting.

This pattern is very easy but once in a while knitters need a little extra help getting on track.  Here's a free PDF tutorial for The Boulevard Blanket to address the most common questions.

At first glance, you may think that The Boulevard Blanket is knit with simple garter stitch...but look again! An easy K3, P3 repeat pattern creates a subtle vertical striping effect.  The knitting pattern looks the same on both sides...it's reversible!

The Boulevard Blanket - Free Knitting Pattern
This warm, cozy, chunky blanket is very easy to knit with super bulky yarn.

The pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes.

SIX BLANKET SIZES:

Baby/Infant Blanket: 28" wide x 28" long
Small (Crib/Lap): 35" wide x 40" long
Medium Throw: 38" wide x 46" long
Large Throw: 44" wide x 50" long
XL Afghan: 47" wide x 55" long
XXL Afghan: 53" wide x 60" long

YARDAGE - SUPER BULKY YARN:

Baby: 320 - 330 yards
Small: 590 - 600 yards
Medium: 730 - 740 yards
Large: 925 - 940 yards
XL: 1100 - 1150 yards
XXL: 1350 - 1400 yards

It's very easy to make any of the blankets longer!  Simply keep knitting and you can bind off on any row.  In the pattern I have included estimates of how much yardage is needed to add 2" in length to each blanket size.

If you prefer to use worsted or Aran weight yarn... use my Meadow Lane blanket knitting pattern.  Click here to download!  Or get the pattern on Ravelry.

Knitting with Lion Brand Hometown in 'Washington Denim'

SUPER BULKY YARN SUGGESTIONS:

Lion Brand Hometown (100% Acrylic) - For the blue blanket shown in the photos I used Lion Brand Hometown in 'Washington Denim'.  This yarn is very soft… but also has great stitch definition so the pattern really ‘pops’.  It’s easy to knit with and very economical.  See all the pretty colorways available and shop for Lion Brand Hometown on the Lion Brand website (US) and LoveCrafts.com (ships to US, Canada, UK, EU and many countries around the world).
Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (80% Acrylic / 20% Wool) - I have used this yarn for many blanket projects including my Winter Dance blanket and Game Time blanket.  Great stitch definition.  Get more details and shop for this yarn on the Lion Brand website and LoveCrafts.com

This pattern looks great with Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick!

Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick is available in a beautiful selection of colorways!  It’s hard to pick a favorite!  Clockwise from the top: Cilantro (deep olive green), Glacier (light icy blue), Denim (dark denim blue), Air Force (medium cornflower blue), Peanut (tan), and Spice (dark burnt orange). See all of the colorways available in Wool-Ease Thick & Quick on the Lion Brand website or LoveCrafts.

For The Boulevard Blanket I usually recommend a solid color yarn so the texture of the knitting shows up best.   However, sometimes multi color yarn can have fun results...one Ravelry knitter used two strands of Aran weight multicolored yarn knit together and it looks so cute!

The Boulevard Blanket knitting pattern - it's reversible!
SKILLS NEEDED:

The Boulevard Blanket is easy to knit and is a great pattern for a confident beginner.  If you know how to knit and purl...and switch back and forth between knit and purl...you can knit this blanket!

If you are a beginning knitter...I would suggest sticking with solid color yarn....and you might want to avoid a really dark color as it can be challenging to see your stitches.

KNITTING NEEDLES:

I used US size 13 knitting needles for this blanket.  You could also try US size 15 knitting needles.

Exact gauge is not important.  However, this pattern looks best with fairly tight knitting.  The vertical stripe effect will not show up as distinctly with loose knitting.

When knitting blankets, I recommend using long circular knitting needles to accommodate all of the stitches easily. Work back and forth just as you would with straight needles...at the end of the row simply turn the knitting and start knitting the next row.  Click here to read my blog post on FiftyFourTenStudio.com about knitting a blanket with circular knitting needles.

INSPIRATION FOR THE PATTERN NAME:

The name for this blanket is inspired by my hometown...Kansas City.  The subtle stripes made me think of all the beautiful streets we have in Kansas City.  An old promotional slogan for the city said "More boulevards than Paris, more fountains than Rome."  I can't confirm if either of these claims are true but we do have many attractive tree lined boulevards in my hometown....thus The Boulevard Blanket.

The Boulevard Blanket - named for the boulevards in Kansas City

Three Year Blog Anniversary!

This week marks three years since I started this Fifty Four Ten Studio knitting blog!  It's been such a fun way to share my knitting patterns, extra details about my patterns, knitting tips and behind the scenes photos of my work in progress. It also helps me record my progress on my knitting endeavors. I really appreciate all who have read my blog!

This month I'm participating in a fun "challenge" on Instagram called the #yarnlovechallenge. If you have not heard about it...the organizers set up the @yarnlovechallenge Instagram page and posted a list of themes for each day for the month of February 2017.  The idea is for any yarn enthusiasts to share photos based on the daily theme.  Themes include: "currently making", "stripes", "where I craft", "tools", "happy color", "yarn love", and more. They came up with a great list of ideas and it's been fun to decide what to share on each day.

In case you are not in Instagram, I thought it would be fun to share a couple of the photos I used...

The theme for Day 1 of the #yarnlovechallenge was "introductions".  This is a photo of me taken on the first day of school...either 2nd or 3rd grade.  I picked this photo because my mother taught me to knit when I was about this age.  As a girl I loved to sew, design clothes for my dolls, knit draw and paint.  I love this photo...my navy blue sailor dress, my metal lunch box, the red ribbons in my hair, the wallpaper in the kitchen of my childhood home, and the umbrella hanging on the doorknob...it all brings back a lot of wonderful memories.

The theme for Day 5 of the challenge was "community".  I made a collage of favorite photos that all relate to my community...Kansas City.  I have lived in the Kansas City area my entire life.  I love my hometown!  We're right in the middle of the US...some call this "fly over country" but those of us who have lived here a long time know we have a lot that makes our city special....friendly people, great BBQ, the amazing Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, the Kansas City Royals baseball team and so much more.  See below for details on this collage of photos.

Kansas City - my community - my hometown.
Here's the details on this photo collage...starting at the top left and working row by row:

1. The Parkway Pillow - my knitting pattern named for Ward Parkway, one of the prettiest and most well known streets in Kansas City.

2. Meyer Circle Fountain - it's located along Ward Parkway and is representative of the many fountains in our city.  Kansas City is known as "the city of fountains".

3. Brookside Blanket knitting pattern - named for the neighborhood where I grew up.

4. Shuttlecock sculptures at the Nelson-Atkin's Museum of Art - our world class art museum!  These sculptures were very controversial when they were installed in 1994.  Now, they are a KC landmark!

5. My Third Street Blanket knitting pattern - the name was inspired by the old River Market area in KC.

6. Sunflowers in Kansas - a photo I took at Grinter Farms in September 2016.  Their sunflower farm is absolutely beautiful...but best to avoid the crowds by going out there during the week.

7. My Westport Blanket knitting pattern - named for one of the oldest neighborhoods in Kansas City.

8. State Line Road - about half of the KC metropolitan area is located in Missouri and half in Kansas.  (I live in Kansas!)

9. The Boulevard Blanket - my free knitting pattern named in honor of our beautiful KC boulevards.  An old promotional slogan for KC was "More boulevards than Paris, more fountains than Rome."

The theme for Day 4 of the #yarnlovechallenge was "speed".  I used this photo...more below...

The Boulevard Blanket - a free knitting pattern.
In terms of speed as it relates to knitting...I am a very slow knitter and I'm ok with that!  I've seen videos on Instagram of knitters who knit so fast it makes me anxious.  It doesn't look relaxing at all to me!  For me knitting is about the process...not about how quickly I finish a project.

The pattern I used for the blue blanket above is my always free pattern...The Boulevard Blanket.  It's very easy to knit with super bulky yarn.  The yarn I used is Lion Brand Hometown USA in the color 'Washington Denim'.  This yarn is so soft and cozy.  It's very economical but don't let the low price fool.  The price is low but the quality is nice.  It's not "sticky" like some acrylic yarns.  I really enjoy knitting with this yarn!  It comes in a wide variety of colors.  I particularly like the softer, muted colors like 'Dallas Grey', 'Houston Cream' and 'Washington Denim'.

I have a couple of projects in the works right now.  Sorry no details ready to share yet but I'm really excited them and I'll post info as soon as it's ready!

January 2017 was a record month for my pattern sales on Ravelry, Etsy and Craftsy!  I am so appreciative of all the purchases and kind feedback on my patterns!  THANK YOU!

In the past couple weeks, I've enjoyed helping a couple of knitters via their email questions. One knitter told me that she taught herself to knit using online videos. I was so impressed especially because her stitches were so well done with very even tension. It's very hard to teach a new knitter how to achieve even tension! I was so happy to be able to help her as she worked on my Where the Sidewalk Ends blanket.  I was thrilled to receive her email a couple days ago with a photo of her beautiful finished blanket!  If you ever have any questions when using one of my patterns, email me using the email address provided in the pattern. I'm happy to help!

Thanks so much for reading this long post!  If you would like to know more about the #yarnlovechallenge you can check out the @yarnlovechallenge Instagram page or see all my photos related to the challenge on my Instagram page.

Have a great week!  Happy knitting! :)

Free Knitting Pattern - Side Line Cowl

I have been working on a lot of patterns this fall and I'm happy to announce my newest pattern...the Side Line Cowl.

Click here to download the FREE pattern.

This pattern is free...every day...on Ravelry and LoveKnitting.

This cowl will keep you warm when you are sitting on the side lines at a football, baseball or soccer game!  And...the pattern is so easy to knit you can make one while watching a game...from the side lines.

Side Line Cowl - quick & easy knitting pattern.
This chunky cowl is quick and easy to knit with super bulky yarn.  It makes a great gift!

I used Loops & Threads Cozy Wool in the color 'Pewter'.  This yarn is sold at Michael's Crafts.  The yarn is 50% wool and 50% acrylic.  It's very soft and makes a great cozy cowl.

This pattern will also work well with other super bulky yarns including:

Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick - "wooly" texture & very warm.
Lion Brand Hometown USA - silky soft & cozy (pick a color to match your favorite team!)

You will need about 120 - 130 yards of yarn to knit this chunky, cozy cowl.

I recommend solid color yarn to show off the pattern texture.  The subtle striping effect will not show very well with multi-color yarn.

Use an interesting large button to make your cowl one of a kind.
A couple years ago I purchased this large navy blue button at a craft store.  I wasn't looking for a button...I simply was walking through the store and this button caught my eye.  I love the color navy blue so my eye is drawn to that color.  I sketched out this design two years ago and it unfortunately got overlooked for a while.  I'm excited to have the button and pattern design finally come together as I originally intended.

Warm & cozy chunky cowl knitting pattern.

At first glance you may think this pattern is simple garter stitch.  Look again!  An easy to remember P3, K3 repeat pattern creates a subtle striping effect.

If you like this texture, you might also like two of my other free knitting patterns:
The Boulevard Blanket and the Side Line Scarf.

Easy Blanket Knitting Patterns

In the past year and a half I have been addicted to knitting blankets!  I love using super bulky yarn to knit blankets because they are quick to knit.  Also, I love the chunky texture and the cozy finished blanket.

I have two new blanket designs in the works that I hope to publish very soon.  Here's a little look at the projects I have been working on recently...

Stitch markers are helpful even with easy knitting patterns.
The tan yarn above is Loops & Threads Cozy Wool in the color 'Mushroom'.  This yarn is available at Michael's Crafts Store.

Weaving in the ends on a new blanket.
The yarn for the blanket above is Loops & Threads Cozy Wool in the color 'Thunder'.  Pattern coming soon!  (Hopefully early November 2016.)

Last week the weather finally started to cool down around here and I pulled a few blankets out of storage.
Belleview Blanket in tan & blue / Brookside Blanket in white
If you are looking for a very easy blanket knitting project here's a few ideas....

My Third Street Blanket knitting pattern has quickly become my best selling blanket pattern.  One of my customers described it as "TV knitting at it's best"!  The pattern is very easy to remember.  Instructions for five blanket sizes including baby, crib, medium size throw and XL afghan.  It's very easy to adjust the length for any of the sizes.

Third Street Blanket knitting pattern
My Westport Blanket knitting pattern is also very easy to knit.  I used Lion Brand Hometown USA in the color 'Dallas Grey'.  I love this yarn! It is very economical and I love how the subtle sheen of the yarn gives this blanket a bit of a modern look.  This pattern also includes instructions for five sizes...and it's easy to adjust the length for any of the blanket sizes.

Westport Blanket knitting pattern - very easy to knit!
If you would like to start with a very easy free knitting pattern...you might like The Boulevard Blanket.  This pattern is easy to knit with super bulky yarn.  It has great texture and makes a super cozy blanket.

The Boulevard Blanket knitting pattern - FREE pattern!
I recommend using solid color yarns for any of these patterns so the texture of the knitting shows best.  If you are a beginning knitter...I highly recommend light to medium color yarns and definitely solid colors.  Dark colors and variegated yarns are challenging for new knitters.

These patterns will work with a number of different super bulky yarns. My three favorite super bulky yarns are...in no particular order...

Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick - favorite colors 'Glacier' & 'Fisherman'

Loops & Threads Cozy Wool - favorite colors 'Mushroom', 'Thunder', 'Fleece', 'Stone' & 'Pewter'

Lion Brand Hometown USA - favorite colors 'Dallas Grey', 'Houston Cream', 'Chicago Charcoal', 'Washington Denim' and 'New York White'

An easy K3, P3 repeat pattern creates a subtle striping effect.  (Reminds me of the lines on the football or soccer field!)

The Boulevard Blanket - New Free Knitting Pattern

The Boulevard Blanket….it’s quick, easy, chunky, warm and reversible!

And best of all this throw knitting pattern is free on Ravelry and LoveKnitting!

You may also click here to download the PDF pattern file for free.

If you need extra help with this pattern, you may download my free PDF tutorial.
The Boulevard Blanket by Fifty Four Ten Studio
At first glance you might think this pattern is just simple garter stitch...but it is not. Notice the subtle stripes? An easy K3, P3 repeat pattern creates this effect.  I love that the texture is the same on both sides for a reversible blanket.
The subtle stripes made me think of roads and all the beautiful streets we have here in Kansas City.  An old promotional slogan for Kansas City said "More boulevards than Paris, more fountains than Rome".  I'm not sure if either of these statements is true but we do have many beautiful tree lined boulevards in my hometown...which inspired the name...The Boulevard Blanket.  (My first pillow knitting pattern was also inspired by a favorite Kansas City street...The Parkway Pillow.)
Quick & Easy Blanket Pattern - Free on Ravelry
This throw knitting pattern is so easy to knit with big needles and super bulky yarn.  I used seven (7) skeins of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in the color Fisherman.  In order to find enough skeins in the desired color and the same dye lot, I ordered the yarn online. This pattern will also work well with Lion Brand Hometown USA and Loops & Threads Cozy Wool (sold at Michael's Crafts).

Check out the Lion Brand Yarn Website for the largest selection of colors in Wool-Ease Thick & Quick and Hometown.

I recommend solid color yarn so the texture of the pattern shows up best.

KNITTING NEEDLES:
The blanket is knit in one piece, back and forth on 32” long circular knitting needles (US size 13).  I used Knitter's Pride Nova Platina knitting needles which I purchased at my local yarn shop.  These are great knitting needles!

INSTRUCTIONS FOR SIX BLANKET SIZES:

The Boulevard Blanket knitting pattern has been completely updated to include instructions for 6 sizes.

Baby/Infant Blanket: 28” wide x 28” long
Small (Crib/Lap): 35” wide x 40” long
Medium Throw: 38” wide x 46” long
Large Throw: 44” wide x 50” long
XL Afghan: 47” wide x 55” long
XXL Afghan: 53” wide x 60” long
It's easy to change the length by knitting additional rows if desired.
This is a great pattern for a confident beginner.  If you know how to knit and purl confidently you can knit this blanket!

Once in a while, knitters have some difficulty getting on the right track with this blanket.  I created a free PDF tutorial for The Boulevard Blanket to address the most common mistakes.  (If you have trouble downloading it using the link above, send me an email and I would be happy to send it to you.  My email address is in the pattern.)

I was inspired to knit this blanket because I wanted to knit a warm, cozy throw and I wanted to knit an easy project that would take a while to knit.  The only problem is....it did not take long at all to knit this blanket!

The Boulevard Blanket is easy & fun to knit!
March 2017 Update:
This winter I worked on a blue version of The Boulevard Blanket. (See photo above.) I used Lion Brand Hometown USA in 'Washington Denim'. I love how this yarn works with this pattern!  The yarn is extremely soft!

Free Easy Chunky Scarf Knitting Pattern

There’s a little bit of snow on this April morning here in Kansas.  Two days ago it was nearly 80 degrees!  That’s spring time Kansas weather…up and down.

It is cold enough that I grabbed my brand new super warm scarf when I drove my daughter to the bus stop.  I was really hoping I would not need this scarf until next winter!

SEPTEMBER 2017 UPDATE:

My 'Two-by-Four Scarf' knitting pattern is FREE on Ravelry, LoveKnitting and Craftsy.

"Two-by-Four Scarf" Knitting Pattern - Easy Pattern!

This is a quick, easy pattern!  The scarf is chunky and cozy...knit with super bulky yarn.

It’s a great pattern for any level of knitter…from beginner to advanced.  Beginner knitters will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, cast off stitches and weave in ends.  Advanced knitters might be able to read a book while knitting this scarf!

I used Rowan ‘Big Wool’ in the color ‘Vert’ #054.  This is a beautiful, super bulky, 100% merino wool yarn.  I love the color!

You will need approximately 135 yards of Super Bulky weight yarn (more yardage if you want to knit a longer scarf).  You will also need size 13 US knitting needles (or size to obtain gauge).

There are many yarns available in the Super Bulky category.  Just look for this yarn symbol on the back of the label with the number “6”…this indicates the “Super Bulky” category of yarns.

Look for this symbol on yarn label for super bulky yarn.
Other super bulky yarns to consider include Lion Brand Hometown USA (very soft!) and Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (if you like a classic 'wooly' texture).

With the super bulky yarn this scarf knits up very quickly!  You’ll want to make one (or two!) for yourself and then you can knit a few for gifts.

Two-by-Four Scarf - FREE knitting pattern
This is also a great man’s scarf knitting pattern.  Pick a color to go with his coat…maybe a nice gray, brown or tan.

As I write this, a little bit of the snow is sticking to the roof tops and the deck.  The leaves of my spring pansies are holding a dusting of snow.  I hope the warm weather returns soon!

Happy knitting!

Free Little Owl Knitting Pattern!

This project was supposed to be a hat….but somewhere along the way it became a little owl card.

Back in November, the plan was to make my almost teenage daughter a new winter hat to go with her new coat.  We picked out yarn at the craft store.  We talked about a simple design with a very tiny owl on the side because she loves owls.  Well...I never knit the hat.  I got distracted with other projects.   She’s been standing at the bus stop every day in the freezing cold without a hat.  I feel bad about that!

Even though I wasn’t making progress on the hat, I kept thinking about the little owl design.  I sketched out some ideas and cast on a few stitches.  Before I realized what had happened, I had knit a little owl shape, cut out some felt wings, eyes and a beak and stitched them onto the knitting with embroidery floss.   Just like “Frosty the Snowman”, the little owl came to life!

Martha Stewart Crafts Extra Soft yarn in 'Gray Pearl',
red, ivory, soft blue & gray felt,
black, light gray & ecru DMC floss.
This cute little owl knits up really quick!  In my free knitting pattern, I’ve assumed you have basic knitting and sewing skills.  Tutorial photos are included in the pattern for any techniques which may be new to you.

You’ll need a few supplies:  size 5 (US) knitting needles, 5-6 yards of worsted weight yarn, felt in desired colors, DMC  embroidery floss, tapestry needle, embroidery needle, & other basic crafting supplies.

Stitch the owl to a blank note card or folded piece of card stock and you have a cute handmade card for a child or grandchild, Valentine’s Day, a new baby or anyone special to you.

Martha Stewart Crafts Extra Soft yarn in 'Winter Sky',
red, ivory & gray felt,
black, gray & ecru DMC floss.

You could also frame the owl in an inexpensive craft store shadow box for a cute wall decoration.

Berroco Vintage Worsted 'Fondant' yarn,
gray, white & periwinkle felt, black, pink & light gray DMC floss.
Or, turn the little owl into a hanging ornament by stitching two pieces of felt together, adding a little stuffing and braid three pieces of yarn for a hanger.

Berroco Vintage Worsted yarn in 'Cracked Pepper',
gray, white, black & red felt,
black, white & light gray DMC floss.
You get the idea….there’s lots of ways you can use this little knitted owl pattern.

This owl pattern would be fun to do with a youth group (probably ages 12 & up with a little knitting and hand sewing experience).  Girl Scout leaders….this would be a perfect teen Girl Scout “OWLS” project!

I haven’t forgotten about the hat for my daughter.  It’s on the knitting needles and maybe someday, before winter is over, I’ll finish her hat.

You can download my free owl knitting pattern on my Ravelry 5410Studio Shop.  Or, I’d be happy to e-mail it to you.  Contact me at:  FiftyFourTenStudio@gmail.com
