The Boulevard Blanket - Free Chunky Knitting Pattern - Updated!

Two years ago this week I published my first blanket knitting pattern - The Boulevard Blanket.

This blanket is quick and easy to knit...and it's reversible!  This is a great pattern for any level of knitter.

This pattern is very easy but once in a while knitters need a little extra help getting on track.  Here's a free PDF tutorial for The Boulevard Blanket to address the most common questions.

At first glance, you may think that The Boulevard Blanket is knit with simple garter stitch...but look again! An easy K3, P3 repeat pattern creates a subtle vertical striping effect.  The knitting pattern looks the same on both sides...it's reversible!

The Boulevard Blanket - Free Knitting Pattern

This warm, cozy, chunky blanket is very easy to knit with super bulky yarn.

The pattern includes instructions for six blanket sizes.

SIX BLANKET SIZES:

Baby/Infant Blanket: 28" wide x 28" long
Small (Crib/Lap): 35" wide x 40" long
Medium Throw: 38" wide x 46" long
Large Throw: 44" wide x 50" long
XL Afghan: 47" wide x 55" long
XXL Afghan: 53" wide x 60" long

YARDAGE - SUPER BULKY YARN:

Baby: 320 - 330 yards
Small: 590 - 600 yards
Medium: 730 - 740 yards
Large: 925 - 940 yards
XL: 1100 - 1150 yards
XXL: 1350 - 1400 yards

It's very easy to make any of the blankets longer!  Simply keep knitting and you can bind off on any row.  In the pattern I have included estimates of how much yardage is needed to add 2" in length to each blanket size.

Knitting with Lion Brand Hometown in 'Washington Denim'

SUPER BULKY YARN SUGGESTIONS:

Lion Brand Hometown (100% Acrylic) - For the blue blanket shown in the photos I used Lion Brand Hometown in 'Washington Denim'.  This yarn is very soft… but also has great stitch definition so the pattern really ‘pops’.  It’s easy to knit with and very economical.  See all the pretty colorways available and shop for Lion Brand Hometown on the Lion Brand website (US) and LoveCrafts.com (ships to US, Canada, UK, EU and many countries around the world).

Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (80% Acrylic / 20% Wool) - I have used this yarn for many blanket projects including my Winter Dance blanket and Game Time blanket.  Great stitch definition.  Get more details and shop for this yarn on the Lion Brand website and LoveCrafts.com.

For The Boulevard Blanket I usually recommend a solid color yarn so the texture of the knitting shows up best.   However, sometimes multi color yarn can have fun results...one Ravelry knitter used two strands of Aran weight multicolored yarn knit together and it looks so cute!

SKILLS NEEDED:

The Boulevard Blanket is easy to knit and is a great pattern for a confident beginner.  If you know how to knit and purl...and switch back and forth between knit and purl...you can knit this blanket!

If you are a beginning knitter...I would suggest sticking with solid color yarn....and you might want to avoid a really dark color as it can be challenging to see your stitches.

KNITTING NEEDLES:

I used US size 13 knitting needles for this blanket.  You could also try US size 15 knitting needles.

Exact gauge is not important.  However, this pattern looks best with fairly tight knitting.  The vertical stripe effect will not show up as distinctly with loose knitting.

When knitting blankets, I recommend using long circular knitting needles to accommodate all of the stitches easily. Work back and forth just as you would with straight needles...at the end of the row simply turn the knitting and start knitting the next row.  Click here to read my blog post on FiftyFourTenStudio.com about knitting a blanket with circular knitting needles.

INSPIRATION FOR THE PATTERN NAME:

The name for this blanket is inspired by my hometown...Kansas City.  The subtle stripes made me think of all the beautiful streets we have in Kansas City.  An old promotional slogan for the city said "More boulevards than Paris, more fountains than Rome."  I can't confirm if either of these claims are true but we do have many attractive tree lined boulevards in my hometown....thus The Boulevard Blanket.

On the Porch - New Easy Blanket Knitting Pattern

I'm so happy to announce my new blanket knitting pattern - On the Porch.

This blanket is very easy to knit and the pattern includes instructions for six sizes.

This pattern name is inspired by many fond memories of time spent on the porch with dear friends and family.  The simple textured stripe design reminds me of the old painted wood floor of a special porch from my childhood.  This lightweight blanket is perfect for cool summer evenings...on the porch.

This blanket is designed with a wide garter stitch border.  The border is designed to be wider at the top and bottom...and just a bit narrower on the sides.

I really enjoyed knitting this blanket!  I used Blue Sky Fibers 'Organic Cotton' Worsted in the color 'Drift'. I purchased this lovely yarn at Yarn Shop and More in Downtown Overland Park, Kansas.  This yarn is absolutely gorgeous...so soft and luxurious!

I used US size 9 knitting needles and had a gauge of about 15 stitches x 20 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch. I found Blue Sky Fibers 'Organic Cotton' Worsted to be a bit thicker than some worsted weight yarns...which was part of why it was a delight to knit with this yarn!

This pattern will work well with many worsted, Aran or DK weight yarns. Simply pick the needle size that gives the best appearance for your choice of yarn and your knitting tension.

Don't worry if your gauge has one or two stitches more...or less...per 4 inches.

If your gauge is 17 or more stitches per inch you may want to follow the directions for one blanket size larger than your desired finished size.

If your gauge is 13 or fewer stitches per inch you could consider following the directions for one size smaller than your desired finished size.

In either case, if your gauge is significantly different than 15 stitches to 4 inches...you many end up needing more...or less...yarn.

Instructions for Six Sizes:

Baby: 28" wide x 30.5" long
Small: 30" wide x 35" long
Medium: 33.5" wide x 38" long
Large: 38" wide x 41" long
XL: 42" wide x 47" long
XXL: 46" wide x 50" long

These are approximate sizes after blocking.  Size will vary with different yarn and/or gauge. Any of the blanket sizes may be made longer by adding additional pattern repeats. More details in the pattern.

Worsted Weight Yarn:

Baby: 600 - 620 yards
Small: 730 - 750 yards
Medium: 880 - 900 yards
Large: 1100 - 1150 yards
XL: 1400 - 1450 yards
XXL: 1600 - 1700 yards

Be sure to purchase additional yarn if you plan to make your blanket longer.  And...if you use a different weight yarn, have some extra yarn on hand just in case you need it!

I like using two small ring style stitch markers to keep track of the transition between the garter stitch border and the center stockinette stitch pattern.  These little green stitch markers are made by Clover.

Blocking of the finished blanket is highly recommended!  It really helps straighten up all the stitches and flatten out the stockinette stitch sections. A worsted weight blanket only takes about a day to dry...it's really worth the time and effort!

This blanket is easy and fun to knit.  With the six size options included in the pattern you can make just about any size blanket...including a tiny infant blanket, a small crib or lap blanket, a toddler/child size blanket, a nice size throw or a really big afghan.

North of the River - New Chunky Cable Blanket Knitting Pattern

I am so excited to announce my newest blanket knitting pattern - North of the River.

This is an easy to knit chunky blanket that features big, bold cables.  Knitting this blanket with super bulky yarn gives these classic cables a modern look!

I have been wanting to design a new big chunky cable blanket for a while now.  I decided to use a dark color yarn to see how that worked to show off the big cables.  

I am thrilled with how this blanket turned out! I used Lion Brand Hometown USA super bulky yarn in the color 'Chicago Charcoal'.  I'm crazy about this rich dark gray!  The yarn has a subtle heather quality to it that gives the color depth and a rich quality.  

North of the River blanket features big chunky cables.

If you are familiar with my knitting patterns, you probably know that many of my pattern names are inspired by streets and neighborhoods in my hometown...Kansas City.  The name for this new North of the River pattern is also inspired by Kansas City.  The city was founded on the Missouri River and over the years the city grew to the south and to the north of the river.  I have lived south of the river my entire life.  When I was growing up we would use the phrase "north of the river" to refer to the northern half of the Kansas City area. "North of the river" has almost always been a fun destination for me...picking up a friend at the airport, going to a party at a friend's house, camping, sailing at Smithville Lake, shopping at a unique store...or driving further north to go on a family vacation...all good memories! 

Of course, you can guess the bold cables in this blanket design made me think of the wide, flowing Missouri River.

North of the River - pattern includes instructions for 3 sizes.

The blanket is knit flat in one piece, back and forth on long circular knitting needles.

Instructions for Three Sizes:

The North of the River pattern includes instructions for three sizes.  I made the large throw size blanket with five cables across. The medium size would work well for a cozy throw blanket, lap blanket or for a young child.  The small blanket size has three cables and would work for a lap or toddler/crib blanket. 

Large (5 cables): 45" wide x 56" long

Medium (4 cables): 37.75" wide x 49" long

Small (3 cables): 30.5" wide x 42" long

Any of the blanket sizes may be made longer by adding cable pattern repeats.  Each pattern repeat adds about 7" to the length of the blanket.  My pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make blankets longer.

Super Bulky Yarn:

Large: 925 - 975 yards

Medium: 700 - 725 yards

Small: 475 - 500 yards

This pattern is designed for use with super bulky yarn (knit single strand).  You could also experiment with knitting two strands of worsted or bulky weight yarn together....just remember you will need at least double the yardage.

Cable Knitting Experience Recommended:

This blanket is easy to knit but I highly recommend having some basic cable knitting experience. Knitting these chunky cables is not hard!  However, I would not want anyone to invest in the yarn for a big blanket unless you are confident in working a basic cable.  I used a cable needle designed for bulky weight yarns.

I use a clip on marker to mark the first stitch when I complete a cable.  Placing that one marker on the first cable in the row helps me easily identify where I worked the cable so I can count the rows and know when to work the next cable row.  These Clover jumbo locking stitch markers are very handy!

Blocking of Finished Blanket Recommended:

I highly recommend blocking the finished blanket. Taking the time to carefully block the finished blanket really makes a difference in the appearance!

The photo above shows my blanket pinned on the blocking mats.  I spent at least 15 - 20 minutes carefully arranging the blanket on the mats, straightening the edges and center cables, and pinning the edges in place.  It took about three days for this big blanket to dry...it was worth the wait!

I really loved knitting this blanket!  Did I mention that this yarn is incredibly soft?!  Lion Brand Hometown USA is 100% acrylic...it's incredibly soft and silky to the touch.  (It's also a very economically priced yarn.)  

Hometown USA is an easy care yarn that says it is machine washable...however, I would not put this big blanket in the washing machine.  I think my washing machine would be really hard on a hand knit blanket...especially of this size...and I would choose to hand wash this blanket and lay it flat to dry on blocking mats.

Spring Knitting...Lots of Projects in the Works

Spring is here!  After about two weeks of off and on rain everything looks beautiful again in Kansas City!  Last weekend I cut a few branches off the Royal Raindrops Crabapple trees in our backyard.  They only lasted for a couple days in the vase but I loved how they brightened up my messy studio table.  (In case you are wondering, I purchased the vase at IKEA in March 2017.)

We've been working on a lot of projects at our house this past month...knitting, sewing, woodworking, gardening...and more.  Something about spring arriving really gets us motivated to do projects and make things!

For about two weeks I have been working on a chunky cable blanket design.  First I did a test knit using some leftover yarn.  It's Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in 'Glacier'.  I love using this leftover skein over and over for testing out pattern ideas because it's one of my favorite colors...and the lighter color really shows off the pattern details well as the design comes together.

After I established a plan for this big chunky cable blanket I cast on with the dark gray yarn I picked for the blanket. The photo below is from last weekend when I was working on this big blanket. I finished knitting the blanket yesterday...so watch for an announcement about this pattern in the next couple of weeks.  (It takes a while to finish the final steps...block the blanket, let it dry, photograph the blanket and finish all the details writing the pattern...and then the pattern can be published!)

  

I love how the pink Crabapple blossoms look with the rich dark gray yarn! The yarn is Lion Brand Hometown USA in 'Chicago Charcoal'.  This yarn is incredibly soft and I love how it worked with this chunky cable blanket design.  More details coming soon!

A few weeks ago my in house woodworking team (husband & daughter) built a headboard for the guest room at our house. They painted it a medium/dark gray....Sherwin Williams 'Software'...and it looks fabulous next to the white bedding (from IKEA).  I love how my Westport Blanket adds texture to the room!  (And...that's my Peace Pillow knitting pattern adding a comforting message.  The design includes felt applique letters.)

When my daughter was on spring break we pulled out the sewing machine and dug through all the fabric in the house and made a big stack of dinner napkins.  We love how they turned out and the assorted fabric patterns remind us of past projects.  And...we're using a lot fewer paper napkins!

We used the directions from this Craftsy tutorial.  Learning to do the mitered corners was the trickiest part of this project but my daughter figured that out!

It took a lot of hours to make this stack of napkins!  The first challenge was finding stash fabric with big enough sections to cut 18" x 18" squares for each napkin.  We washed, dried and ironed all of the fabric because some had been stored in plastic bins for a long time. We wanted it all to smell fresh and clean.  Then we cut fabric, marked fold lines, sewed the tricky little corners for a professional border (this part took a little practice), used a knitting needle to poke out the corners carefully, ironed folds again and sewed down the final edges.

All of the fabric was from our stash - leftover from quilting, sewing class projects, etc.

We worked on this project for several days!  It was a fun project to do together and the finished napkins look really cheery at dinner time.

Earlier this week I stopped in at Yarn Shop & More....a LYS in Overland Park, Kansas.  This cute shop is located in Downtown Overland Park....or some call it "Old OP".  It's a quaint, small town feeling shopping district in a suburb of Kansas City.  Yarn Shop & More has a beautiful assortment of yarns!  It's fun to step in the door and see the yarns arranged by color on the shelves...like a rainbow...

Even though the bright colors were very tempting, I ended up purchasing a lovely neutral colored yarn by Blue Sky Fibers...it's Organic Cotton Worsted in the color 'Drift'.

I splurged on this gorgeous yarn to knit a blanket for our house. I tested a few stitches with the yarn and I fell in love with how it looks in a simple garter stitch.  So...this new blanket design will definitely have a wide garter stitch border...

FEBRUARY 2020 UPDATE:

As of March 2017, I have designed twelve chunky blanket patterns which all use super bulky yarn. Often I hear from customers who like one of my chunky blanket designs but would prefer to work with lighter weight yarn or want to knit a light weight blanket for a summer baby.  This new Summer Sidewalk design is the first adaptation of one of my chunky blanket designs.  I enjoyed knitting this blanket very much and plan to add additional lighter weight blanket designs in the future!

YARN:

This new blanket design started with six skeins of Tahki 'Cotton Classic' that I discovered in my stash back in February.  This beautiful dark denim blue is labeled as #3832...which appears to be discontinued.  However, this yarn is available in over 125 beautiful colors!

The Summer Sidewalk blanket knitting pattern may be used with many DK or worsted weight yarns.

If you are knitting this blanket for a baby or child, look for a machine washable, easy care yarn.  There are many easy care yarn options available including: Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, Berroco 'Comfort' DK or worsted weight, Knit Picks 'Shine Worsted' and Knit Picks 'Comfy Worsted'...just to name a few!

KNITTING NEEDLES:

Tahki 'Cotton Classic' is usually classified as DK weight yarn.  I used US size 7 knitting needles when I knit this blanket. My gauge was about 18 stitches to 4 inches.  However, exact gauge is not essential for this pattern.

To pick a needle size...I would suggest picking a DK or worsted weight yarn that you like and doing a small test knit in garter stitch (knit every row) plus a few rows of stockinette stitch.  Test knit with a couple needle sizes.  Pick the needle size that gives the best appearance with your yarn and your knitting tension. I would suggest trying for stitches that are not too tight and not too loose.  Of course, if you have a different gauge that will mean a slight difference in the overall size of your blanket...but probably not a huge difference if you stick with DK or worsted weight yarn.

FIVE BLANKET SIZES:

Baby blanket (infant): 27" wide x 27.25" long
Small blanket (crib/lap size): 29" wide x 31.25" long
Medium blanket (toddler/crib): 31" wide x 35.25" long
Large throw: 35" wide x 41.25" long
XL throw/afghan: 41" wide x 49.25" long

Finished size may vary depending on differences in yarn weight and gauge used.  However, as I said above...don't worry about gauge too much...pick the needles size that gives the best appearance for your yarn!

Any of the blanket sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats.  Each pattern repeat adds about 2" to the length of the blanket.  In the pattern instructions there are estimates of additional yardage needed make each blanket size longer.

This blanket pattern is very easy but I still like using two stitch markers to remind me where to make the easy changes as the pattern progresses.  That way I don't have to worry about counting stitches!

I loved knitting this blanket!  The pattern is simple and easy to remember.  And, I especially love the results!

BLOCKING FINISHED BLANKET:

For best results, I recommend blocking the finished blanket. It really is worth the extra effort!  With this cotton yarn it only took about one day for my little blanket to dry.

Winter Returns: Get out all the hand knit blankets!

For weeks we have been experiencing a very early spring here in Kansas City.  But, this last weekend...winter weather returned!  On Saturday we even had a little snow for the first time since December.  The only thing to do is get out all the blankets!  

We keep our house pretty cold so we keep blankets in every room of the house.  No reason to turn the heat up when you can bundle up in a cozy hand knit blanket. My daughter humored me by posing for this photo as the snowflakes were falling...you can see a few white specs in the photo!

We only received a dusting of snow but it was enough to make things look pretty for a day or so...a few flakes dotted the daffodils in our backyard...

Of course, cold weather means it's a great time to stay inside and knit!  I have three projects going right now and I'm making plans for a fourth project.  Lots of knitting going on around here!  

I found this beautiful blue yarn in my stash a few weeks ago and I'm so happy that I was finally able to put it to use....details on a new design coming soon.  The yarn is Tahki 'Cotton Classic'.  I have had it for many years and it looks like this color is now discontinued.  This DK weight yarn is still manufactured and comes in over 125 beautiful colors!

It's spring break for my daughter this week.  No out of town plans for us but we are fitting in some fun things like a visit to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art here in K.C. to see the newly remodeled Bloch Galleries that include a phenomenal collection of Impressionist paintings (I can't wait to go back!), going to a couple restaurants and a bit of shopping at the book store.  And, this week we'll be cheering on all the Kansas basketball teams in the NCAA tournament. I'm a huge college basketball fan and I hope to get a lot of knitting accomplished while watching the games.
